How is addiction related to trauma?
Addiction is one of the many solutions that the body’s nervous system uses to regulate the lasting impacts of trauma. There are other common behaviours such as depression, chronic pain, hypervigilence/mistrust, emotional overwhelm, irritability, and loss of a sense of the future.
How can trauma-informed counselling or therapy help people to recover?
The main principle of trauma-informed care is safety. As a Certified Canadian Counsellor (CCC) trained in trauma informed care my foremost concern is creating spaces of emotional safety that promote respect and dignity for the client.
What if I don’t recall any specific traumatic events in my life?
The purpose of trauma recovery isn’t to dig up memories; it’s to understand how past adverse events affect your body and mind today. We work with the 'living legacy' of trauma to help you regain self-agency and self-compassion, regardless of whether you have specific memories of the events.
Do I have to work on trauma in Finding Home Counselling sessions?
No. I provide person-centred, client-led therapy where you are the expert of your own life. Whether we are meeting in my Calgary office or via virtual sessions, we work collaboratively to clarify your goals and map out a path that feels safe and effective for you.
Does Finding Home Counselling offer sliding scale pricing?
I strive to make therapy accessible for those without insurance or EAP benefits. During our initial meet-and-greet, we can discuss options and create a transparent plan that maximizes your access to mental health resources in Alberta.
